Les Impromptues

The Spring Fling Open Studios weekend is in full flow and yesterday we had one of their 'fringe' events in the gallery garden. Dance Company 'Les Impromptues' performed a piece choreographed and danced by Chantal Breavoine with dancers Nichola Finch and Sara Lockwood. They even had us joining in at the end!

We are open all day today (Sunday 29 May) for Spring Fling and people are certainly out and about in the glorious sunshine. Tomorrow is the last day of Spring Fling so don't miss the chance to get out and explore Galloway via all the fascinating artists' studios and galleries that are scattered across the region.

John Threlfall Demo

This Saturday, 5 March, we have another of our popular artist's demos in the gallery.

John Threlfall will be taking us through the techniques that he has used in some of the work in his current exhibition with us.

If you are interested in wildlife art and landscape painting then this is a great opportunity to meet one of Dumfries and Galloway's finest artists, and get an insight into his working methods.

Please drop in to the gallery any time between 11am and 1pm - be there at 11 if you want to hear the start of the talk by John but he will be in the gallery the whole morning.

Edinburgh

We have two very different interpretations of Edinburgh on display in the gallery at the moment.

Our current show features the work of Tracy Levine, often more well know for her Cumbrian Landscapes. We have lots of Tracy's Cumbrian and Scottish Landscapes but we also have this striking City painting by her.

Another well know Landscape painter, Jonathan Mitchell, has depicted Princes Street on a Winter evening at dusk. His painting reminds me of the end of a days Christmas shopping.

Hooper, Levine, Threlfall and Smith

 John Threlfall - Spring Squirrel

We have nearly finished the installation of our first exhibition of 2016 and the gallery has been transformed. It really does feel like Spring is just round the corner and it is wonderful to have the gallery full of vibrant new work.

Tracy Levine - Balcary Bay

The exhibition opens on Saturday 6 February - if you can get to Castle Douglas please join us for drinks in the gallery between 11am and 1pm. All the artists will be there so it is a great chance to meet them and see what all four of them have been working on over the Winter.

Christine Hester Smith - Musicians Vase

The exhibition features the work of printmaker Lisa Hooper, painters Tracy Levine and John Threlfall and ceramicist Christine Hester Smith

You can read our latest email newsletter about the exhibition here.

Lisa Hooper - Perambulation

Make Art and Donate with Colin Blanchard

Tomorrow, Saturday 12th December, Colin Blanchard will be in the gallery demonstrating print making from 11am to 1pm.

Colin has produced a new linocut specially for this event (photographed below). Visitors to the gallery will be able to make their own print from Colin's linocut - perfect to take home and use as a special Christmas card. You will also be able to talk to Colin about his innovative printmaking techniques and see some of the equipment that he uses.

There is no charge for making your own print but Colin will be asking for donations to the Cumbrian Flood Appeal Fund.

The linocut will be printed on top of a screen print. Here is a video of Colin printing screen printed backgrounds in preparation for his demo here in the gallery.

We will be serving mulled cider or spiced apple juice and our coal fires will be lit to drive away any winter chills so it should be a very enjoyable Saturday in the gallery. Look forward to seeing you all there.

Ewan McClure Portrature Demonstration

At our opening on Saturday we were privileged to have Ewan McClure in the gallery painting a portrait of Simon.

In the early stages the painting was recognisably Simon.

Visitors were fascinated by Ewan's painting techniques.

The finished portrait. What an amazing painting. Thank you Ewan for sharing your talent with us and to Simon for sitting so patiently.
